Summary
Stanley Healthcare Solutions (previously known as Xmark) produces Radio Frequency Identification-based security and safety systems to protect people in healthcare environments. At the heart of this technology is a wireless tag worn by individuals, which communicates with a network of receivers and door monitors to protect the individual from specific threats. Stanley Healthcare required a new tag for two of its systems. The Pedz tag for the Pedz pediatric protection system, which protects pediatric patients from the threat of abduction; and the Securaband tag for the RoamAlert wander prevention system, which protects individuals at risk of wandering due to dementia.
Solution
The Stanley Healthcare team required the services of mechanical and industrial design specialists to work with its R&D team in developing the two new tags. For the Pedz tag, Design 1st helped Stanley Healthcare design a tag that provides a high level of security, eases clinical workflow, and is “kid-friendly.” Although the tag needed to be tamper-proof with a cut-resistant band, the design also needed to take into consideration quick removal when a patient was ready for medical procedures and easy re-attachment when they return. The tag also needed to be comfortable to wear by children both at rest and at play. Finally, personalization of the tag, by the child, with a variety of different skins and stickers was important.
For Securaband, Stanley Healthcare needed a solution that would discourage residents from trying to remove the tag. Design 1st developed a tag housing and band that was very robust, but also small, discreet and comfortable.
